Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) caused by LMNA gene mutation in Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is a complex, life-threatening cardiovascular disease with a predominantly recessive mode of inheritance and possibly low penetrance in heterozygotes. It is characterized by left ventricular dilation and systolic dysfunction with subsequent development of both atrial and ventricular tachyarrhythmias, which can result in the development of congestive heart failure and sudden cardiac death. The symptoms of affected dogs usually occur between 10-15 months of age.
Inheritance: autosomal recessive - read more
Mutation: LMNA gene
Genetic test: The method used for genetic testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. DNA testing can be done at any age.

DNA test sample: EDTA whole blood (1.0 ml) or buccal swabs. Detailed information about sampling can be found here.
