Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a breed-specific generalized myoclonic epilepsy with an early onset. It occurs in Rhodesian Ridgeback breed. The disease is characterized by myoclonic seizures, which cause rapid uncontrolled muscle jerks and twitches. Muscle jerks usually affect proximal limb, trunk, head and face. Seizures can occur at any time, most commonly when the dogs are sleeping or resting. Photosensitivity has also been noticed in affected dogs. The disease appears early in life, typical between 6 weeks to 18 months of age.

Genetic test: The method used for testing is extremely accurate and allows complete differentiation between affected animals, carriers and healthy dogs. Testing can be done at any age.
