Hereditary ichthyoses represent a heterogeneous group of skin cornification disorders characterized by hyperkeratosis and blistering or scaling of different severity levels. In Great Dane the disease is characterized by severe hyperkeratosis with a formation of strongly wrinkled, thickening and scaling skin, especially in the region of eyes and nose. The symptoms become evident right after birth and thus include dry and scaling skin, untidy appearance and a swollen skin, which all can lead to secondary infections. Affected dogs are usually euthanized at an early age due to poor prognosis. The disease is inherited in autosomal recessive manner.
