Macrothrombocytopenia (MTC) is an asymptomatic inherited disorder in which dog's platelets are abnormally large and low in number. The main signs of the disease are enlarged platelets and their reduced number. Affected dogs are not prone to bleeding presumably due to the presence of a normal circulating platelet mass measured in affected dogs. In addition, many veterinarians mis-diagnose macrothrombocytopenia with either immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT) or immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA).
