Obesity

Obesity is a serious health problem affecting dogs. It is associated with a shorter lifespan, higher incidence of pancreatitis, respiratory, urinary, reproductive, and orthopaedic disorders. An association with a higher incidence of certain cancers was also observed. Of all dog breeds, Labradors have the highest rate of obesity and the highest motivation for food. A genetic change responsible for an increased tendency to obesity has also been discovered in this breed. The discovered genetic change is associated with higher body weight, greater motivation for food and obesity. It occurs more often among assistance dogs.
