Parakératose nasale héreditair (HNPK) - Levrier Anglais

Hereditary nasal parakeratosis (HNPK) is an early onset disease that generates crusts with cracks on nose of otherwise healthy dogs. Cells on the skin are not fully keratinized which causes skin to be dry due to moisture loss. With time dry scales forms which eventually leads to deep cracks. Top edge of the nose is affected while other parts of the skin are of normal development. Crusts generated on nose usually do not cause pain. HNPK has been reported in Greyhounds and Labrador retriever dogs, although different mutations in the same gene are responsible for the development of the HNPK. Clinical symptoms are comparable in greyhounds and Labrador retrievers. HNPK is currently uncurable, despite the existence of some topical application agents that relieve the symptoms.
