DNA profile (ISAG 2020) is a genetic profile analysing a set of 231 SNP markers standardised by International Society of Animal Genetics. DNA profile can be viewed as a molecular fingerprint of your animal. It is used for genetic identification of an animal and parentage verification. It does not provide any data about hereditary diseases, traits or breed origin.
DNA profile can be generated using 2 different sets of markers:
• ISAG 2006: 22 STR markers (short tandem repeats) are tested
• ISAG 2020: 231 SNP markers (single nucleotide polymorphisms) are tested
DNA profiles generated using STR and SNP markers are not interchangeable. This means that parentage verification or identity confirmation is possible only when all animals have DNA profiles established with the same set of markers.
Blood samples are preferred for DNA profile testing because the method is very sensitive to DNA quality.
